Academic background

Harald Kegler, born in 1957 in Aschersleben/East Germany, was educated as town and regional planner at the Architectural College in Weimar and got the diploma in 1983 (urban renewal of old towns). After graduating in 1986 (PhD) he has began a carrier as a teacher and urban planner. In 1987 he started as a researcher at the Bauhaus in Dessau. During the years 1993 – 1999 he was the director of the experimental department and the vice director of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation. The main project in that time was “Ferropolis” as part of the “Industrial Garden Realm” – a regional experiment for the renewal of the old industrial district of middle-Germany, which was accepted as part of the EXPO 2000. In 1998 he received, together with a team, the European Planning Award, and in 2000 and 2002 National Awards “Region of Future” and “Urban Conversion”. In 2000 he founded his own office for town and regional planning. He worked and published about town and regional transformation: regional strategies, Charrette-participation-methods, urban planning history and theory, design of old industrial landscapes, settlement renewal and urban conversion of “slab-urb-housing” (Plattenbau). He is a member of the national Planning-Association in Germany and the Congress for New Urbanism (USA). 2000 he was appointed Adjunct Professor in the School of Architecture at the University of Miami/USA. He is also member of the Academy of Urbanism (Great Britain). Between 2008 and 2012 he was teaching urban planning at the Bauhaus-University in Weimar. In 2012 he was habilitated. Since 2013 he is Professor (PD) for Sustainable Planning and Planning History at the University Kassel, Institute for urban Developments. Actually the main subject in his research is the “Resilient City-Region”.
