Application of a managementtool (MTool) for the improvement of laying hen well-being and health (MTool)

Within a research and demonstration project, a managementtool (MTool) for the improvement of laying hen welfare is tested and improved on about 15 laying hen farms that refrain from beak trimming or are planning to do so. The tool was developed on the basis of scientific evidence and practical experience. It allows an animal based assessment of the individual management success and structured approach to identify potentially causal factors in case of impaired welfare, e.g. in case of feather pecking or cannibalism. In this way it provides support to the laying hen farmer concerning decisions which housing and management aspects need improvements in order to successfully keep laying hens with intact beaks.
