Zusammenfassung, Abstract
This paper reports about a research project investigating the ways in which students’ lab-work can be used as a tool for diagnosis and assessment. The reason for evaluating this question is that students’ lab-work is often used to focus on the development of subject-specific, inter-disciplinary, and social skills. Thus, teachers need instruments for assessing to what extent pupils are achieving these skills via lab-work activities. The project started with a survey of the participating teachers’ and students’ attitudes towards lab-work in general, as well as diagnosis and assessment through practical activities in particular. In the second phase, instruments for lab-work assessment were developed and continuously optimized in cooperation with the teachers following a participatory action research approach. During the third phase, the evaluation focused on how the students improved their way of experimenting and their attitudes towards lab-work after the instruments of diagnosing and assessing by lab-work were used. This paper reports about the developed instruments, the experiences with their use, and finally provides a range of results of the accompanying evaluation. These results show that teachers can easily change the way in which lab-work is done, concerning diagnosis and assessment in everyday teaching in lower and higher chemical education. By doing so, useful information in different fields of students’ development of competence are provided.
