Implementation of animal health plans in organic sow herds in Germany

Zusammenfassung, Abstract
The aim of this study was to identify measures suited to be part of animal health plans on organic sow farms for the improvement of hygiene management and animal health care. A weak-point analysis was performed on 17 organic sow farms in Germany using a modified critical control point concept for on-farm assessment and detailed status quo analysis. Results showed that the housing conditions of 10 farms were permitted based on exceptions of the EC-Regulation. 12 of the 17 farms performed livestock data acquisition. On many farms the feeding regime exhibited substantial deficits in nutritive supply, especially for lactating sows. Quality and intervals of cleaning and disinfection measures varied considerable between farms. Vaccinations of sows and piglets were performed to a different degree on 15 of the 17 farms. Optimisation strategies, listed as short, middle and long term measures, were set up in form of farm-customized animal health plans according to the status quo. Farms were attended continuously during the entire project time to ensure guidance along the animal health plan implementation. At the end of the project 14 farms could improve at least partially their livestock data acquisition, as well as hygiene and feeding management. Animal health plans have proven to support identifying problem areas, to set up improvement strategies and to enforce the cooperation between the involved actors. However, the benefit of animal health plans for reducing the present animal health deficits is limited when clear requirement specifications in relation to the animal health status are lacking.
