Abstract


The trend towards miniaturization of electronic modules at steadily increasing electrical stresses results in growing demands on the load capacity of the utilized insulation systems. That is why, especially in the field of engineering plastics, knowledge of the electrical strength and aging performance has a great importance. Environmental influences, such as temperature and humidity, may influence the insulating function of plastics, thus reducing the lifetime of the entire electronic assembly. In this paper, a new specimen design for engineering plastics is presented, which allows stressing the insulating plastics with electric field strength under various environmental conditions over an extended period of time. The new specimen design allows simulating long-term behavior under electrical stress and simultaneously intensified external conditions, thus allowing to quantify it for the given environmental conditions. For the electrical dimensioning of the specimen numerical field calculation is used. The analysis of the injection molding process and the construction of the injection mold is performed by Moldflow simulations. Microstructural analyses give evidence for the adhesion of the filler material and the electrodes.
