Citizens in social welfare states claim equal access to opportunitiesin life. The public discourse on poverty and educationalopportunities focuses on leisure time activities as one dimensionof social participation. Using data from the ‘Labour Market andSocial Security' (PASS) panel, this articles examines the relationshipbetween young people's social position and life chances. The analysis is based on Simmel's considerations of poverty interms of dependency. As a result poor young people experiencemore limited access to those leisure time activities providing demandedcapabilities. The decisive factor is their cultural capital.
