Abstract
Organic farmers show an increasing interest in cultivation of silage maize as valuable forage for cattle and for energetic utilization in biogas plants. Maize cultivation systems are often characterized by environmental and cultivation problems like soil erosion, difficult weed control and poor nutrient supply. Aiming at a reduction of these problems a field experiment with mixture of maize and climbing beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) was carried out from 2013 to 2015 at the University of Kassel-Witzenhausen (Hesse). Results showed lower yields of the mixture treatments compared with sole cropped maize. The chosen bean variety had an impact on the bean yield and later sown beans caused lower bean proportions. Furthermore, methane yields of maizebean silages decreased with increased bean proportions.
