Abstract
The formation of tert-butyl-substituted polyhedral silsesquioxanes (POSS) starting from the corresponding silanetriol is reported. Several intermediates involved in this complex condensation process could be identified spectroscopically. The initial condensation intermediate t-Bu2Si2O(OH)4 , as well as t-Bu6Si6O9 and t-Bu7Si7O9(OH)3 (2), were characterized by x-ray crystallog. Owing to the high crystal quality it was possible to exptl. det. the geometric parameters of the unusual cyclic H bond network in a dimeric POSS trisilanol for the 1st time. The findings were confirmed by DFT calcn. of optimized structures for 2 and its Me-substituted analog Me7Si7O9(OH)3. Also, the authors studied the structural changes concomitant with dimer formation/dissocn. of the tert-butyl-substituted POSS trisilanol and its Me analog. [on SciFinder(R)]
