Abstract
Using a microscopic theoretical approach we analyze the ultrafast ionization and explosion of clusters induced by intense femtosecond laser pulses. We show that the remarkable correlation between kinetic energy and charge of the produced ions observed in different experiments can be described as arising from strongly inhomogeneous charge densities in the clusters, which are induced by the strong quantum dynamics of the electrons after laser excitation.
