Abstract

The chapter "The mountain grassland vegetation of the Hohe Rhön and the Heidelstein: Their value, past developments and upcoming perspectives" of the regional conservation and natural history book ("Der Heidelstein", edited by J. Jenrich) deals with the biological and cultural disversity of the local montain grasslands (species-rich Nardus grasslands and related semi-natural grassland communities). The focus is on the montane area of the Rhön Mountains (Hohe Rhön) and, more specifically, on the Heidelstein as the highest and central mountain of this biophysical unit. The text provides basic insights about the special grassland community composition, their historic and current land use as well as the change in their societal perception during the last decades. The grassland's conservation value, covering all types of German conservation aims, and results of recent studies regarding long-term vegetation changes are summarised. Finally, an outlook on upcoming challenges in local and regional grassland conservation is given.
