Abstract

The study focuses on the potentials that can be
generated by an improved knowledge concerning the feed value of protein sources.
Assessments as well as the decision "Make it or buy it" require
reliable information on the nutritional value in terms of ingredients and
digestibility of compound feed, protein supplement feeds and farm mixtures. To
get an overview of the situation on organic farms, 147 feed samples from 56
farms in Germany were analysed. The results revealed that farm mixtures are equivalent
to compound feeds regarding the in vitro digestibility. Protein supplements
showed a huge heterogeneity in the in vitro digestibility of organic matter. It
is concluded that in vitro digestibility of feedstuffs and diets provide
valuable information, needed when trying to optimise the efficiency in the use
of home-grown and external feed resources.
