Dr. Martina Flörke

Dr. Martina Flörke leads the “Global and Regional Dynamics" (GRID) research group on Water at the Center for Environmental Systems Research, University of Kassel, until end of 2018. Her research concentrates on the identification and quantification of consequences of global change for the environment and for societies, in particular related to freshwater quantity and quality. The thematic areas cover the impacts of socio-economic developments and climate and land use changes on water resources Here analysis and evaluation of the impacts are accomplished qualitatively by applying scenario development methodologies and quantitatively by modelling and indicator development. The principal goal is to develop and to evaluate strategies that help to prevent negative impacts. She worked as a senior scientist focusing on the application and development of the global water modelling framework WaterGAP3 to simulate changes of the hydrological cycle, water use, and in-stream concentrations. Dr. Flörke gained broad experience in international and European research projects and has been involved in processing a number of interdisciplinary projects addressing scenario development as well as water and climate change issues.

She coordinated and leads working groups in EU-projects and other global assessments. During the last years she was involved in global scenario assessments, e.g. "Millennium Ecosystem Assessment", "Global Environment Outlook 4". She was a contributing-author of the United Nation's report "A Global Environmental Outlook - 5" and invited as an Expert Reviewer of the IPPC's 5th Assessment Report of Working Group II. She acts as a Coordinating Lead Author for the upcoming European regional assessment of the Sixth Global Environmental Outlook report "Healthy Planet - Healthy People". Currently, Martina Flörke and her group contributed to the UNEP report "A Snapshot of the World’s Water Quality: Towards a global assessment" and EU-FP7 projects IMPRESSIONS and EartH2Observe. She is actively engaged in the “Intersectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project” (ISI-MIP fast track and ISI-MIP2), the Regional Model Intercomparison within ISI-MIP (Bridging the scales between global and regional impact projections) and in the working group “hyper-resolution global hydrological modelling”. Furthermore she is an active participant in the World Water Scenarios Initiative “Water Futures and Solutions” located at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (Austria).
