Beschreibung
Today, there is a great variety of digital tools that can be used in science education. In order to analyze their potential, they first have to be categorized concerning their characteristics. For example, there are tools that just serve as a collection of scientific facts, that allow for a more individual learning approach, that help to gather new data or that provide new ways of visualizing or even manipulating scientific models. As science and science education very much relies on experiments, gathering data and using abstract models, digital tools focusing on these aspects are especially promising.
In order to be discussed and used properly, “digitalization” can only be dealt with by distinguishing the different kinds of digital tools and then analyzing their respective obstacles and chances in terms of methodology, instructional opportunities and usability. So, e.g. learning management systems have to be differentiated from e.g. VR-visualizations.
This leads to a more detailed view on the teaching and learning possibilities connected with the use of different digital tools and opens the way to the development of teaching scenarios in which digital tools can be used to foster students’ understanding of science in the best way possible. In this contribution, a possible categorization of digital tools for learning science will be given, their respective educational potential will be discussed, and possible difficulties will be considered. Obviously, lessons learnt during the CoVID-pandemic will be taken into account, too.
