Description
Our departmental section focuses on the systematic investigation of foreign language learning and teaching processes, and how various factors influence the quality of these processes in cognitively challenging foreign language learning environments. In the aftermath of the PISA study, it has become of paramount importance to identify and research exactly those factors that are key to successful learning. Among these are different learning skills, the use of media, etc. as well as learning and thinking processes such as learning styles, learner types, and learning strategies, which can best be captured by means of introspection. Moreover, our research takes into account culture-specific influences on learning and teaching behavior.

Our classes and student advising put considerable emphasis on the development of our students' skills as learners, teachers, and researchers, following the premises of the LMR (Learner-Moderator-Researcher) Plus Model (Finkbeiner, 2001). This involves the development of a broad range of competencies, including strategic competence (with regard to both learning and teaching), diagnostic competence, and evaluation competence. For instance, our students learn to use, critically evaluate, and develop data collection and assessment procedures; they learn to analyze texts, classroom situations, and thinking processes of teachers and learners. In addition, we foster our students' abilities for self-reflection by raising their awareness for their learner biographies; thus, enhancing their metacognitive awareness is a very important objective for us.
