Summary
The GRID-Land research group focuses on the development of integrated land use change models. The research objective of is to evaluate impacts of land use change, identify favorable and adverse effects, and finally contribute to the search for more sustainable pathways into the future. Much of the scientific output has also a high political relevance, which is why the group is continuously engaged to disseminate results to a broader audience. The group is led by Rüdiger Schaldach and consists of 8 -10 seniopr scientists, postdocs and PhD students, research assistants and technical staff with different natural science, environmental science and informatics backgrounds. The models currently developed are designed either for regional scales like districts, states or countries as well as for large scale to global assessments (LandSHIFT model).
Objectives and Approaches
The activities of the GRID-Land group are focused on Global Change Research, including environmental changes like climate change, but also socio-economic processes like globalization and demographic changes. The overall goal of sustainable development is guiding the research objectives which are to develop concepts and - based on these concepts -build integrated models of land use change to assess both environmental and socio-economic effects and consequences of Global Change processes on terrestrial systems. The group concentrates on two thematic / methodological aspects, which are (i) the coupling of different disciplinary models in an integrated modeling framework and (ii) the implementation of feedback loops between coupled modules / submodels, in order to provide more holistic approaches and to increase the realism of the impact assessments. The models currently developed are are all spatially explicit, which means they explicitly represent the biophysical environment in the form of a rectangulaer grid. The models are designed for different spatial scales and can have quite different spatial resolutions, ranging from the 1 km to the 10 km (5 arcminutes) scale. Most important research tool is the LANDSHIFT model framework. The time periods addressed - usually in the form of scenarios of the future - typically cover 20-25 years, or in aggregated form up to 100 years. In ongoing projects the group is focusing on study regions in different parts of the world including the continent of Africa, Europe, the Jordan valley (Israel, Jordan, Palestine) and the state of Hesse in Germany
