Research Interest

This transdisciplinary research platform BUILDING ART INVENTION pools expertise from the fields of visual art, architecture, urban planning, interaction design, industrial design, experimental physics and materials research. It is dedicated to the development of innovative materials systems at the convergence of art and science.

Academic background

HEIKE KLUSSMANN is an artist and a professor of art and architecture at the University of Kassel. Prior to that she was a guest professor at Art CenterCollege of Design, Pasadena, USA. Her work has been shown in recent exhibitions at the Detour Hongkong, Scin Gallery London, THINK:Material Toronto, Aedes Berlin, Zeche Zollverein Essen, Akademie der Künste Berlin, KW Institute of Contemporary Art Berlin, China Art Objects Gallery Los Angeles. Her many honors and awards include first prize in an international competition to design Düsseldorf’s new Wehrhahn subway line. It's the most important urban development project currently underway in Düsseldorf, Germany. 2009 she and Thorsten Klooster have founded the Bau Kunst Erfinden / Building Art Invention, which is devoted to the experimental development of new material concepts in the context of art, architecture, and science. The new material development "BlingCrete - Light reflecting Conctete" received the Design Pus Award an one of the coveted iF gold awards for highly innovative material development and outstanding design achievements. In 2012 the resesrch platform Bau Kunst Erfinden/ Building Art Invention is honoured with the Hessian Higher Education Award for Excellence in Teaching´s 1st prize. The prize presented by the Hessian Ministry of Science and Arts and the Hertie Foundation is regarded as the most important award for teaching in Germany.
