Prof. Dr. David Laner

Research Areas

Research Interest
In my research, I apply a systems perspective to address sustainability issues related to waste management, recycling, material cycles and circular economy. Based on the analysis and evaluation of waste and resource systems, my goal is to develop solutions and strategies from an environmental engineering perspective, which result in lower environmental impacts and higher resource efficiency. My research interests include the use of static and dynamic material flow models to understand and optimize resource use on urban, national and regional levels, the evaluation of waste-resource-systems with respect to environmental performance and resource efficiency, the assessment and mitigation of (long-term) risks associated with land-fills, the comparison of alternative waste treatment scenarios, sound waste characterization techniques as well as experimental studies to understand process performance of waste treatment and recycling activities. Central methods in my research are Material Flow Analysis (MFA), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Scenario Analysis, and experimental studies on the lab-, pilot- and field-scale.
