Abstract

Simplicity of construction, affordable housing, strengthening the sense of community, social mix, diversity of housing types, minimization of space requirements, building with local building materials, good furnishings and user-friendly architecture - the plans for the expansion of the Dessau-Törten housing estate were also programmatically committed to these demands on contemporary housing. Under the direction of Hannes Meyer and with the participation of students, the Bauhaus building department developed a modern mixed-use complex. From 1928 to 1930, five three-storey arcade houses were built. The houses, which were overlooked by researchers for a long time, test the potential of "simple building" in a visually restrained manner, which is once again highly topical today. The aim of the project is to develop an exhibition that will open in December 2025 at the Deutschen Architekturzentrum [German Architecture Center] (DAZ)Berlin. The exhibition is based on research results obtained at the University of Kassel as part of a research project supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG) between 2016 and 2019.
