Abstract
From 1992 to 1999, the Volkswagen Foundation supported a project network "relationships of education and employment system in Japan in comparative perspective" with 2.9 million DM. 12 scientists conducted in-depth field research studies and documents analysis, in particular a series of interviews in companies and educational institutions and with policy makers in Japan have been carried out. By contrasting the Japanese and the German situation strengths, problems and trends of change in the particular emphases of the Japanese education and employment system were shown and discussed in a comparative perspective. In addition, six conferences served the German-Japanese exchange of information among scientists and practitioners. The research network was coordinated by Prof. Dr. Ulrich Teichler (Kassel INCHER), who also led the project “the transition from education to employment”. The main results are published in a book series edited by Ulrich Teichler: "Bildung und Beschäftigungssystem in Japan" (Leske+Budrich Publishers, Opladen).
