The high-frequency performance of a common-mode (CM) choke and an EMI filter deteriorates due to the stray capacitance. This paper presents a prediction of the stray capacitance in the common-mode and differential-mode configurations of the CM choke individually. In addition the effect of the stray capacitance on the core material is investigated for various core materials. The influence of the stray capacitance of a CM choke on single-stage EMI filters is investigated and verified. Finally a proposal is made to lessen the influence of the stray capacitance on multi-stage EMI filters that employ more than one CM choke.
