In Frankfurt, Germany the high-rise building SGZ-Bank was constructed in the early 1970s with a raft foundation in the Frankfurt Formation which comprises mainly overconsolidated clay. During construction extensive measures were taken to prevent tilting of the building which however showed no long term improvement so that in 1980 maximum settlements of s = 30.6 cm and an angular distortion of α = 0.32% were recorded. In the scope of this paper the results of a numerical simulation of the construction process of the SGZ-Bank are presented and compared to the measurements taken over a decade. In the 3D coupled pore pressure-displacement finite element analysis the visco-hypoplastic material model AVISA was applied to capture the time-dependent material behaviour of the overconsolidated clay.
