Zusammenfassung, Abstract
One of the most important limitations of PLA is its brittleness, which leads to a reduction the number of possible applications of PLA in a wide range of fields. To overcome this problem, two different impact modifiers were used and their effects on the Charpy impact strength, energy absorption and tensile properties of PLA were observed. The impact modifiers were compounded in a twin screw extruder, and subsequently, test specimens were produced using injection moulding. The Charpy impact strength, energy absorption and tensile strain at break properties of PLA increased proportionally in correlation with the increasing impact modifier content. The energy absorption and tensile strain at break increased significantly when the Biostrong content equaled 15 wt%. This effect represents an enhancement of 13 fold of energy absorption and 28 fold of tensile strain at break in comparison to PLA, respectively. Scanning electron micrographs were taken to assess the impact modifier distribution and morphology. DSC thermograms of PLA were also examined, in order to understand the changes in the thermal behaviour induced by the impact modifiers.
