Zusammenfassung, Abstract

Entrepreneurship is an important factor for socio-economic growth and its successfulness
depends on different elements. The current literature on entrepreneurship stands on the
theory that being an entrepreneur is not inherited; it is a discipline and can be learned.
However, an entrepreneur, in order to be successful, needs a conducive environment in which
he/she acts innovatively. In other words, entrepreneur needs an ecosystem, which enables
him/her to have optimal use of his/her new ideas. While many studies have been grown in
academic areas of various disciplines and recently it has extraordinary attracted the attention
of researchers, neither of the studies have paid adequate attention to integrate the accessible
literature on entrepreneurial ecosystem. That is to say, the available researches on
entrepreneurial ecosystem are still small and fragmented. Therefore, this study attempts to
fulfill this gap by categorizing different models exist on entrepreneurial ecosystem. More
precisely, this study focus on the facet of environment in which entrepreneurs innovatively
conduct their activities. To do so, this paper develops a new theoretical framework and
provides a systematic review of entrepreneurial ecosystem literature by (1) conducting a
categorization scheme for entrepreneurial ecosystem studies, and (2) analyzing—by means of
content analysis—all journal papers, which are exposed through a search engine, Web of
Science engine. As a result, papers are extracted for review based on their objectives,
methodologies, and theoretical frameworks. Through detecting these gaps and conflicts and
by providing further directions for future research, this study illustrates how researchers and
industries can take advantage from synthesizing relevant findings in the field of
entrepreneurship ecosystem.
