Abstract
The influence of three different space allowances in the waiting area (4.0, 2.5, 1.7 m²/cow) on heart rate (HR) and frequency of agonistic behaviour of 12 higher ranking focus cows and 12 lower ranking focus cows were investigated in a research herd of 85-87 horned German black pied cattle. Social position had no influence on HR and agonistic behaviour. HR in the waiting area increased with decreasing space, with significant differences between 4.0 m²/cow and 1.7 m²/cow (P=0.000) and between 2.5 m²/cow and 1.7 m²/cow (P=0.008). Significantly more attacks occurred at 1.7 m²/cow than at 2.5 m²/cow (P=0.006) and in tendency than at 4.0 m²/cow (P=0.052). Hence, in terms of animal welfare, a space allowance of 1.7 m²/cow in the waiting area is not advisable for horned milking cows. A space allowance of 4.0 m²/cow compared to 2.5. m²/cow did not provide additional benefits under the investigated conditions. Further investigations should be carried out to substantiate these results, possibly taking into account further aspects such as driving intensity, total duration of milking or heart reate during the whole waiting period.
