Zusammenfassung, Abstract
From 2002 to 2004 a study about the status quo of organic poultry husbandry was carried out. Aim of the study was to collect and analyse data concerning animal welfare, animal health and economics. In a first step a postal survey on 278 farms with layers took place. Secondly, 70 farms were visited and further data collected (investigation), including the scoring of plumage condition and injuries of 10 hens per group . Survey: Size of hen stocks varied on a large scale (1 ? 40.000). On average, a farm kept 518 hens (median: 30 hens). 102 farms had more than 50 layers. Of these farms, 8 {\%} had aviaries , 85 {\%} free range systems and 66 {\%} covered outside runs. Investigation: Median of hens per farm amounted to 1.425 (mean 4.608, 55 - 132.000). In 40 {\%} of the interviews, feather pecking and cannibalism were mentioned as a serious problem. Losses around 9 {\%} (median). Plumage damages were found in most of the pens.
