At the experimental farm of the Uni?versity of Kassel rapeseed and winter peas were investigated in pure and mixed stands in two growing periods. Sowing winter pea at the beginning of September has a high risk of winterkill compared with later sowings due to an advanced crop development. However, higher grain yields of survived winter peas were achieved in mixtures than in both pure stands. Farmland was used more efficiently with relative yield totals (RYT) at 2.2 and 2.1. Moreover a lower weed density and a higher resistance to lodging were determined for mixtures than in rape?seed and pea pure stands, respectively.
