Abstract

The research project examines the constantly changing localization of the documenta in the urban space of Kassel, which is the most prominent continuous design element of the exhibition series and at the same time can be considered exemplary for a general tendency: Art exhibitions and especially periodic formats are increasingly manifesting themselves in the form of inscriptions in a series of often very different sites which expand the established canon of exhibition spaces. The examination of the form of historical exhibitions and their comparison developed here looks at the localizations of documenta in Kassel between 1955 and 2017. The investigation is dedicated to the changing shape of the format and the processes of form formation through the organization of existing spaces. The aim of the work is to make the constantly changing form of the documenta and the shifts in curatorial practice that become apparent in the localizations visible. The interrogation of the exhibiting in the existing draws attention to the fact that documenta finds its form in its successively altered spatial layout and thus in the city. Despite the increased research on the documenta exhibition series in the exhibition studies, the built environment as a material for framing the exhibition event and the form of exhibition design developed in the process is a field of research that has received little attention and is of great importance for academic debates in the disciplines of urban planning and architecture as well as for art studies and exhibition studies, since the specifically arranged localizations of art explore the potentials of the built environment and the realities of the present that are reified in it for the mediation of art.
