Abstract

In the case of on farm slaughter of cattle using a mobile unit, the animals are usually slaughtered with visual contact to or in the herd. This could have an impact on the welfare of the herd mates. In the present study, from video recordings the behaviour of herd mates two minutes before and four minutes after stunning and slaughter was compared on a farm with slaughter by rifle shot on pasture (N=11) and a farm with slaughter with captive bolt stunning on the farm (N=12). There were indications of a brief startle reaction of the herd mates, namely increased "walking backwards" (captive bolt) and "turning away quickly" (rifle shot) immediately after the shot. However, some of the herd mates also showed feeding or rumination after the shot, which indicates a rather short and low stress response. However, since they on average spent 53% (rifle shot) or 25% (captive bolt) of the observed time "observing slaughter", and the interpretation of this behaviour is difficult, further studies should cover a longer observation period and should assess the behaviour more differentiated.
